Inspiring Students of Chelmsford College lnternational, Lagos on STEM Career Opportunities
The Students of ChelmsFord College, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos were very elated when they learnt that their school day on 6th of October, 2017 would be a very different one filled with a Career and Motivational Talk from a group of young professionals coming to their school.
There were 59 students, 7 teachers with the Principal in attendance. The programme started with the singing of the National Anthem and a welcome speech from Dapo George, the Head Boy of the School.
The facilitator Job Oyebisi, then introduced the Photz Consult Team and went on to the meat of the programme; introducing what
1. STEM is
2. Why STEM is very important as related to skills and jobs of the future.
3. A talk and video documentary on career opportunities in STEM.
4. Speeches from some great personalities like former US President Barack Obama, Mark Zuckersberg and Bill Gates on the importance of STEM.
5. Role model in terms of inventors for field in STEM.
He went on to challenge the students to write down one problem or challenge in their world that they would like to solve and encourage them to seriously pursue the attainment of these dreams as choosing a career in STEM empowers them to be creators. He made that famous quote by Abraham Lincoln and which the students latched on that "The best way to predict the future is to create it."
And all the teachers and students agreed with him that our nation Nigeria needs problem solvers who are citizens of the countries for its myriad challenges.
When it was time for feedback, many of the students were more than excited to tell of how the career talk had inspire them for good and change their thinking. An SS2 Boy named, Bamidele shared his dream of how he wants to build a flying car to solve the problem of traffic congestion in Lagos, Nigeria and would therefore pursue a career in STEM.
A girl, Nofisat in SS1 said she would love to build a sewing machine that operates by voice activation.
Job Oyebisi, gave gifts to students who were bold enough to shared their dreams and what they learnt from the career talk.
The Principal of the School, Mr Solomon on behalf of the management team, teachers and students appreciated the Photz Team for coming to host such an important programme in their school and look forward to future talks.
